UPDATE ON FEB 15TH PA COFFEE MORNING PRESENTATION

On February 15th, the PA hosted a Coffee Morning Presentation at Valencia Clubhouse. Mrs. Margaret Kaloo and about 30 elc parents actively participated in a lighthearted presentation called, "Parenting Matters - Move from Unwanted Conflict to Effective Resolution". Retired principal and parent advisor, Rob Whiting was our guest speaker.

As a Parentshop Master Trainer, Rob introduced us to the scripted mediation technique called PASTA. If you are a parent that has conversations with their teenager(s) that morph into arguments with yelling and screaming, then the PASTA method may be a suitable alternative. The PASTA outline is below:

P – Prepare – define the problem, fill in your script, rehearse

A – Arrange an appointment

S – Say something affirming, what the problem is and what you want

T – Tame the tiger along the way

A – Agree about some things

There were a few points that he wanted us parents to remember. They were:

- Children are not mini adults

- Talk less, listen more

- Kids are overwhelmed with too much talk and too much information

The PA plans of having regular Coffee Morning Presentations with special guest speakers with the aim to deepen the connection between parents and their children and to provide parenting tools that can be used immediately!

Please return to our PA page for regular updates.

Update on Jan 18th PA Coffee Morning Presentation

On January 18th, the PA held our first of the year Coffee Morning Presentation at Valencia Clubhouse. Mrs. Margaret Kaloo and a good mix of parents from Early Years to Secondary were in attendance. Shelagh MacFarlene, a registered psychologist was our guest speaker and she spoke about Mindfulness. The 1 ½ hour presentation was filled with two-way dialogue and exercises.

Last term, Shelagh completed a series of after school workshops about Mindfulness with our Year 9-11 students. She is working with elc to continue Mindfulness training for other years, and the school will be notifying parents of any upcoming workshops and training.

The PA plans of having regular Coffee Morning Presentations with special guest speakers with the aim to deepen the connection between parents and their children and to provide parenting tools that can be used immediately!

Many parents in attendance were interested in a Parents' Mindfulness workshop. The PA will be working with Shelagh to lock down a date and time.

Please return to our PA page for regular updates.
